- PART 5: THE LAST BETRAYAL AND THE JUSTICE MY GRANDFATHER DESERVED
- Martin Keller was gone.
One moment, he had been standing inside my grandfather’s workshop, watching investigators uncover thirty-two years of family secrets. The next, he had disappeared without a word.
I looked down at the medical report Marcus had sent me.
There it was again.
Martin Keller’s signature.
The same attorney who had helped identify Evelyn Carter’s supposed remains. The same man who had kept my grandfather’s letters hidden for years. The same man who had just handed me the key to a compartment full of evidence. - And now his name appeared on a document suggesting my grandfather had been poisoned.
I turned to Detective Mitchell.
“Martin’s gone.”
She immediately spoke into her radio.
“Locate Martin Keller. He was last seen near the workshop. Do not let him leave the property until we’ve spoken with him.”
I stared toward the open doorway.
“Sarah, I think we’ve been looking at this the wrong way.”
“What do you mean?” - “My father stole my house. He manipulated Marcus. He concealed Evelyn’s identity. But Martin has been present at almost every important moment of this story.”
Mitchell studied me carefully.
“You think he was helping your father?”
“I think he knows exactly how my grandfather died.”
Before she could answer, my phone rang.
Marcus.
I answered immediately.
“Where are you?” - “Julian, listen to me. I don’t have much time.”
His voice sounded nothing like the arrogant man who had laughed about selling my house.
He sounded terrified.
“Marcus, I know about the medical report.”
“Then you know Grandpa was murdered.”
“We don’t know that yet.”
“I do.”
I closed my eyes.
“How?”
There was a pause.
“Because I found the recording.” - My heart pounded.
“What recording?”
“Grandpa had security cameras inside his house. Dad told us they stopped working years ago. They didn’t.”
I gripped the phone.
“Where are you?”
“At the old train depot outside Tucson. Come quickly.”
“No. You’re coming to the police.”
“Julian, you don’t understand. Dad has people watching me.”
“Then tell me where the evidence is. I’ll send officers.”
